This past Wednesday I sat with Mitch Swoboda in his father Jozef’s hospital room. Jozef had just slipped into eternity. Mitch recounted how his dad was born and raised in a home with a dirt floor. When Jozef was 17 years old his country was attacked by Germany. Jozef joined the Polish Army and served with distinction. After Poland fell, Jozef served with the Free Polish Army. Mitch recounted various battles and incidents with pride and through tears. After the war Jozef was sponsored by a Polish-American family and he immigrated to Detroit, fell in love and married his sponsor’s daughter, then began a new life. Jozef Swoboda was a patriot and had the great fortune to love two countries.
As Christians we too love two countries. We love our country yet we long for a place knowing that this world is not our home. We long for a place where Jesus Christ is King of kings and Lord of lords. We long for the presence of our God. Even so, come Lord Jesus!
Happy Memorial Day. With great appreciation we remember those who have given their lives for our freedom.
Rejoicing in Christ,
